Swarming & swarm control

Swarming is how a honeybee colony reproduces. A healthy colony divides itself: the old queen leaves with a large portion of the flying bees to found a new home, while a new queen is raised to carry on the original colony. It is natural, spectacular, and almost always something a managed beekeeper wants to anticipate and control.

Uncontrolled swarming costs you bees, costs you honey, and can cause real nuisance to neighbours. With a little timing and a couple of standard techniques, you can keep most colonies at home.

Why colonies swarm

Colonies build up rapidly in spring. When a hive becomes crowded with bees, brood and stores, and forage is plentiful, the urge to reproduce takes over.

The main triggers are:

  • Congestion in the brood nest, with nowhere left for the queen to lay.
  • An ageing queen whose pheromone output no longer reaches the whole colony.
  • A strong nectar flow filling the combs and reducing laying space.
  • Good weather in late spring and early summer.

The swarming season peaks from roughly mid-spring to midsummer in temperate regions, but timing varies a great deal by climate, so watch your own bees rather than the calendar.

Recognising the signs

The clearest warning is the presence of queen cells along the bottom and edges of the comb. Distinguish them carefully:

Other tell-tale signs include a congested brood nest, a sudden lull in the queen's laying as the colony prepares her for flight, lots of bees "hanging about" or bearding at the entrance, and drones present in good numbers.

Prevention: give them room

The simplest control is to relieve congestion before the swarming mood sets in.

  • Add space early. Put on supers ahead of the flow so foragers have somewhere to store nectar.
  • Open the brood nest. Adding drawn comb or foundation in the right place gives the queen room to lay.
  • Keep the queen young. Colonies with first-year queens swarm less.
  • Ensure ventilation and avoid overheating in strong colonies.

Giving space buys time, but once a colony is committed to swarming you will need to act on the queen cells themselves.

Swarm control once cells appear

Inspect strong colonies every seven to ten days through the season. Seven days is the key interval: it is shorter than the time from a freshly laid queen-cell egg to a sealed cell, so you should never be taken by surprise.

The artificial swarm (split)

The most reliable method is to mimic the swarm yourself by separating the queen from the brood and the queen cells.

  1. Move the original hive to one side.
  2. Place a new floor and box on the original site.
  3. Find the queen and put her, on a frame of brood, into the new box on the old site. Fill out with drawn comb or foundation and add the supers.
  4. Move the original hive (now queenless, with the queen cells and most of the brood) a short distance away.

The flying bees return to the old site and the queen, satisfying the swarming urge without losing any bees. The moved hive raises a new queen. This is often called a Pagden artificial swarm; several named variations exist.

Removing queen cells — with caution

Cutting out queen cells can delay swarming, but it is not a reliable standalone method. Bees build cells faster than you can remove them, and the consequences of a mistake are serious.

If you knock down every cell but the colony has already swarmed (or the old queen has gone), you can leave the colony hopelessly queenless. Always confirm the queen is present and laying before destroying cells, and never leave a colony with no viable queen or queen cell.

Cell removal works best as a stop-gap between inspections, combined with giving space and a proper split at the first opportunity.

If a swarm issues

If a colony does swarm, the bees usually settle nearby first, often on a branch, forming a hanging cluster while scouts search for a permanent home. A clustered swarm is generally docile, as the bees have gorged on honey and have no nest to defend.

To collect a clustered swarm:

  1. Place a box, skep or nuc beneath the cluster.
  2. Give the branch a sharp shake or brush so the bees drop in, or let them walk up a sheet into the box.
  3. Make sure the queen is inside; if she is, the rest will follow. Watch for bees fanning at the entrance, a good sign she is home.
  4. Leave the box until dusk so stragglers join, then move it to its new site.

Hive the swarm onto frames, ideally with a frame of drawn comb, and feed if forage is poor. Treat captured swarms with care: their disease and varroa status is unknown, so keep them apart from your other colonies until you have assessed them.

Responsible practice

  • Be a good neighbour. Swarms alarm the public. Active swarm control is part of responsible beekeeping.
  • Know your local rules. Some regions have swarm-reporting or collection schemes, and disease-notification duties may apply. Check the requirements where you keep bees.
  • Only collect swarms you can house and inspect properly.
  • Mind biosecurity. Quarantine swarms and unknown colonies; do not move bees into areas under disease controls.
